site-specific theatre co in Kingston ON

who we are / what we do

The Cellar Door Project is a non-profit arts collective that makes plays about your neighbourhood, in your neighbourhood.
The Cellar Door Project is a site-specific theatre company dedicated to re-animating historical spaces through performance. Be it theatre, film, or art installations, we are in the business of reflecting a community’s past and present back to them by its telling their stories in the spaces they originally happened in. To us, “the past” means anything from the early beginnings of a city to yesterday’s breakfast.

The Cellar Door Project creates historical pieces based on characters whose stories unfold in the same space in which the audience sits. So far, these spaces have a park, a cemetery, 2 old jails, a record store, a Kingston fort, the National Arts Centre Rehearsal Hall, a dive bar, and the Diefenbunker.
